This week the Irish react to Dervish, Eurocovers goes to Jamaica, and the Schlagerboys sing-a-long with Carola. In fact travel is in the air as this EuroBlog Round-up is coming from Hout Bay, South Africa right down the road from Cape Town. Thanks to the Internet and G3 WLAN networking this EuroBlogger might has well be sitting at the Eurovision Broadcasting Union headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland – except the weather and the beaches are much better on the Cape this time of year.
Pardon me that Helsinki is almost the last thing on my EuroBlogging mind with endless blue skies and sun drenched sandy beaches stretching out in front of me, still in service to esctoday.com and in the interest of doing a little unscientific social research I have been wearing my Eurovision Song Contest cap from Athens around today. And while I know for a fact that there are many song contest fans in South Africa, only two guys have walked by and noticed the hat (to be fair no-one has ever noticed the hat at home). I think they were German tourists. They looked kind of sore too; they're probably still complaining that Kate Ryan was robbed. Except. I watched the semi-final DVD from start to finish on the EuroLaptop during the flight down. And while EuroBlogger likes Kate Ryan and giant glow sticks as much as the next peaking, over thirty club-kid, I can now say with conviction, “Kate Ryan was not robbed.” If you want to know who was robbed, Bulgaria was robbed. Musical accomplishment, a touch of local folk sound, and daring to put a fat guy in a dress on stage who could sing too should have earned Bulgaria a place in the final.
