For the sixth time, the BBC Radio 3 awards for world music will be given out in 2007. World Music greats such as the late Ali Farka Toure and Gotan Project are represented, alongside newcomers like Nuru Kane and Etran Finatawa. In the 'newcomer' section, the Portuguese representative in the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest, Sara Tavares, is among the nominees.
In Portugal, Sara might not be called a newcomer at all: At the age of 15, she won the two most important Portuguese music contests as well as the Portuguese selection for the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest. With the song Chamar a música (Call my music), the singer achieved an eighth position in Dublin, which is still one of the best Portuguese results in the contest ever. After her appearance in the contest, she went on to become a very famous artist in her country. In 2006, her latest album Balancê appeared. Meanwhile, Sara Tavers has started to write and compose her own songs and has also been succesful as a producer.
The winners will be announced on 31 March 2007 on Radio 3's World Routes programme and the Winners' Concert will be held on Sunday 27 May 2007 at the Barbican in London, when the winner of the Audience Award will be announced. The concert will be broadcast on Radio 3, on BBC FOUR and will be available online.
