Maltese stars in statue tribute

Three of Malta's former performers made a surprise appearance in the village of Ghaxaq this week, giving a live performance to mark the return of a restored statue to its rightful place.

The statue of Saint Mary was being returned to stand in front of the Saint Mary's Band Club in Ghaxaq after undergoing repairs, and to the delight of the crowd, Renato (1975), Georgina (1991) and Mary Spiteri (1992) all appeared on the balcony to sing the new song Marija as the statue was carried shoulder-high to its resting place.

No strangers to Eurovision themselves, the writers of the new song are none other than Paul Abela and penned by Joe Julian Farrugia. A special souvenir CD of the song was issued the same day, and is currently being sold from the Band Club headquarters, although a clip can also be downloaded from the Band Club's website at santamarijaghaxaq.com .
