Sweden and the Eurovision Song Contest
Sweden has achieved the strongest record of all the Scandinavian participants in the Eurovision Song Contest, having notched up four wins over the years, one of them the unforgettable Waterloo which, together with its performers ABBA, has become a cliché of the contest, and was one of its biggest commercial hits. Broadcaster SVT has shown its prowess not only as a musical contestant, but also in production, lending its expertise to the teams behind several recent contests.
Sweden stuck with the familiar semifinal tour around Sweden for Melodifesivalen 2006, with four qualifier rounds and a second chance night selecting ten songs for the grand final in the Globen arena, Stockholm.
Carola
Carola had already participated for Sweden twice before winning this year's Melodifestivalen. In 1983, she came third at the contest with Främling, followed by European commercial success with the song in its English and Dutch versions. After a failed comeback at the 1990 Melodifestivalen, Carola stormed back in 1991 with Fångad av en stormvind, which tied for first place in Rome, and was declared winner over France's Amina only on the number of 10 points it received (both countries had received the same number of 12s). At the 2006 Swedish selection she was the hot favourite from the very moment she announced her participation, and although not winning the jury vote, romped home to a third Melodifestivalen victory with overwhelming support in the public televote. She is a stalwart and legend of the Swedish schlager industry.
