Montenegrin broadcaster accuses Serbia

After Beovizija 2005, many TV and radio stations have started with uncontrolled and aggressive broadcasting of songs from the Serbian semifinal. Montenegrin broadcaster RTCG now accuses Serbian broadcaster RTS of breaking the internal rules of Europjesma – Evropesma 2005.

The national final Europjesma – Evropesma is organized in turns by RTS (Serbia) and RTCG (Montenegro) every two years. This year RTCG is in charge of the contest. The problem this year is that there are only two days separating the semifinal Montevizija from the national final, while Beovizija took place two weeks before the final.

Considering the possibility of media favouritism of songs from Beovizija, the first semifinal of the national selection in Serbia & Montenegro, representatives of RTS and RTCG had agreed on a deal restricting the airplay of Beovizija songs. From February 19th till March 4th, Serbian broadcaster RTS would only be allowed to broadcast one song that finished in the top 14 of Beovizija 2005 per day, outside prime-time. RTS was expected to warn its media partners about these regulations.

However, RTS has not undertaken any action to prevent media abuse of the festival procedure and even broke the agreement itself by promoting songs from Beovizija. Montenegrin broadcaster RTCG considers this as influencing the audience and obstruction of a fair televoting procedure during the final.

RTCG and the Montevizija Board will define their position regarding this brutal breaking of the rules in order to protect the integrity of authors and performers who still have to perform at the second semifinal in Montenegro.
