At last, after 7 years of absence, Hungary will possibly come back to the Eurovision Song Contest as Hungarian broadcaster MTV has applied to be one of participants of next years contest in Kiev. The final decision on participation will be taken before 15th December. Until then, broadcasters can withdraw without a financial penalty.

National broadcasters are to be informed about the costs of participation before 17th November. As for Hungary, the costs will be about the same level of countries like Denmark and Norway. For the time being Hungrian broadcaster MTV is going through financial problems and budget cutting.

Supposing the situation does not get better and European Broadcasting Union will charge too much for participation, it is possible that MTV withdraws from taking part in Eurovision Song Contest 2005 in Kiev. However, if it will be likely to cover the costs of the event, a national preselection would be organized to select the potential Hungarian representant.

In 1998 Hungary participated for the last time in the Eurovision Song Contest. Hungary has participated 4 times in total in the contest and their best position was the 4th place in 1994 for “Kinek mondjam el vétkeimet” by Friderika Bayer.
