Czech Television announces austerity measures
Czech Television (ČT), the national public broadcaster, is preparing for substantial budget cuts and employee layoffs, according to reports from Aktuálně.cz. The planned austerity measures are expected to commence in 2027 and will affect several areas of programming, including children’s and news channels.
Popular singing competition to be axed
Among the programmes facing cancellation is a ‘popular singing competition’. While the specific name of the show has not been explicitly stated, the news has sparked concern among Eurovision fans. ČT has traditionally used national selections or internal selections to choose its Eurovision representative. Aktualne.cz is reporting that CT will reportedly not participate at the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest in 2027.
Criticism from former ČT head

Uncertainty for Eurovision 2027

Czechia in Eurovision
Czechia debuted at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2007 with Kabat and is yet to win the competition. The country achieved its best result in the contest in 2018 when Mikolas Josef placed 6th in Lisbon with his song Lie to me.
The Czechs have partaken in Europe’s favorite television show 14 times, out of which they have only qualified to the Grand Final six times, namely in 2016, 2018, 2019, 2022, 2023 and 2026.
The central European land locked country has not been very lucky in the competition, after three consecutive years of poor results and non-qualification the Czechs withdrew from the contest in 2010 and returned back after a 5 year hiatus in 2016.
In 2026 Daniel Zizka represented Czechia at the Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna with his entry ‘Crossroads’.
