The Dutch public broadcaster, NPO, has received an extension from the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) regarding its decision on the Netherlands’ participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2027. This extension provides the NPO with more time to navigate the complexities surrounding their involvement in next year’s competition.
NPO seeks clarity on Eurovision 2027 participation
The NPO’s original deadline to confirm its participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2027 was Tuesday 15 September. However, a spokesperson for the NPO has confirmed that the EBU has granted them additional time as per local media reports in the Netherlands. The broadcaster now aims to provide more clarity on the Netherlands’ involvement by the end of September.
This development follows the earlier announcement by AVROTROS, the usual Dutch delegating broadcaster, that it would not take responsibility for the Netherlands’ participation in Eurovision 2027. AVROTROS cited ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly concerning Israel’s continued presence in the contest, as the primary reason for its withdrawal.
The decision by AVROTROS left the NPO searching for an alternative solution to ensure the Netherlands’ presence in the competition. Other major Dutch broadcasters, including Omroep MAX, KRO-NCRV, and BNNVARA, have also indicated that they will not be taking on the organisational role for 2027.
Hence if NPO is to participate at Eurovision 2027 it might opt to do so with NTR and NOS, the very same broadcasters which broadcast the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 live from Vienna.
This is not the first instance of the Netherlands requesting an extension for its Eurovision decision. The country also sought additional time in 2024 following the disqualification of Joost Klein and expressed similar concerns in 2025 regarding the geopolitical climate.
The NPO is currently exploring various options to facilitate Dutch participation, even without AVROTROS in its traditional role. The goal remains for the Netherlands to send an entry to Burgas, Bulgaria, the host city for Eurovision 2027, should a viable solution be found.
The deadline for countries to submit their participation applications to the EBU concludes tomorrow 15 Septemeber, hereafter they have a month’s grace period to withdraw their applications without a financial penalty.
