Bulgarian National Television (BNT) is expressing strong ambitions to host the Eurovision Song Contest in 2027, aiming to transform the event into a significant national celebration. According to Milotinova, the broadcaster’s goal is to make Eurovision a truly national event. The process for selecting the host city for the 71st edition of the contest is reportedly entering its decisive phase.
Bulgarian National Television (BNT) has set its sights on bringing the Eurovision Song Contest to Bulgaria in 2027. A key figure, Mliena Milotinova (BNT Director), has publicly stated that BNT’s overarching goal and aspiration is to elevate Eurovision beyond a mere television production, transforming it into a national event that captivates the entire country.
The announcement comes as the selection process for the host city of the 71st Eurovision Song Contest reportedly moves into its crucial final stages. While specific details about potential host cities or the bid itself have not yet been fully disclosed, BNT’s clear intent signals a strong commitment to securing the prestigious music competition for Bulgaria.
This commitment highlights Bulgaria’s potential return to the Eurovision stage as a host nation, following its participation history. The move would undoubtedly generate significant excitement among Bulgarian Eurovision fans and potentially boost the nation’s profile on a global scale.
Milena Milotinova (BNT Director) says:
From the city that wins, we expect a partnership with the Bulgarian National Television. We expect it to walk the path with us from winning this competition to the Grand Final of the Eurovision Song Contest. This is a very long journey, months of daily work. Cities must be prepared that there is no question of work during the semi-finals and the final. The competition consists of 9 show programs, including 6 dress rehearsals for which tickets are sold. And three television broadcasts in dozens of countries around the world. For the city, work on the competition begins on the first day after it is selected.
Milena adds more details about the EBU’s criteria to host the event:
They have clearly defined criteria, and this competition between cities is carried out according to these criteria. The working group that evaluates the proposals is made up of Bulgarian and foreign experts who have vast experience in conducting and preparing these competitions over the last 15 years. The expertise of the EBU is enormous and BNT benefits from it. BNT is the host television that will organize the competition, but it is going step by step with the EBU
Milenova and BNT are aiming to make the Eurovision Song Contest a national event and have stated that the financial impact will be great:
Firstly, because the gathering of many people implies a hotel base, all kinds of accompanying activities, including logistics. Secondly, because Bulgaria is focusing attention on itself. This is one of the biggest events for next year. It is of great importance for tourism. The country’s tourism and added value are measured in months and years after that. It depends on us how we will expose our country.
The 2027 Eurovision host city will be determined by BNT in coordination with the EBU by the end of July. Either Sofia or Burgas will host the event next year in Bulgaria.
The EBU and BNT are expected to reveal the Eurovision 2027 host city and the official dates of the competition by 31st of July.
