The song
Angel in disguise is a mid-tempo pop song. The lyrics are a declaration of love:
Looked to my right – my better half
And it’s alright, if it’s all I have
I let it ride, I’m satisfied
Just be mine
Kill me with killa kiss
Kill me with tempting lips
Stare at me with candy eyes
Love me with luscious thighs
The performers and the songwriter
Musiqq is composed of vocalist Emils Balceris and producer/songwriter Marats Ogleznevs. The latter started his career as a member of the band Device, which competed in the Latvian national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2006 but did not make it pas the semi final stage with Love is everywhere. Emils Balceris is known for competing in the Latvian edition of the TV show Clash of the choirs. Musiqq have been performing as a duo since 2009. They scored some radio hits, most notably Klimata Kontrole. Their debut album ŠÄ« ir tikai mÅ«zika was released in 2010.
In 2011, they competed in the Latvian national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest. With Angel in disguise, written by Marats Ogleznevs, they finished second in the second semi final, second in the first round of voting in the final but first in the superfinal giving them the ticket to Düsseldorf.
The national selection
Eirodziesma 2011 consisted of two semi finals, a second chance round and a grand final. A total of eleven songs competed in the national final, where the winner was chosen in two rounds of voting. A jury and televoting first selected the top three before the eventual representative for Düsseldorf was determined.
Latvia in the Eurovision Song Contest
Latvia was the last Baltic country to debute in the Eurovision Song Contest when they did so in 2000. Brainstorm finished third in Stockholm with the song My star marking it one of the most impressive debuts to that date. In 2002, Marie N won the contest with I wanna and after disappointing results in 2003 and 2004, Latvia would be in the final for the following four years. However, the country has been finishing outside the top ten since 2006 and achieved their first two last places in the respective semi finals in 2009 and 2010.
Statistics
This will be Latvia's 12th participation in the Eurovision Song Contest. Musiqq will already be the third male duo (but the first one since 2005) to represent the country. It will be the ninth time that the Latvian entry is performed in English.
Angel is disguise is the 17th and hence third last song to be performed in the second semi final. It is preceeded by the dance pop song from Belarus and it is followed by the mid-tempo pop song from Denmark. So far, Latvia has almost always done well at late positions in the draw – the only exception was their home entry in 2003. On the other hand, Latvia has often done badly when performing early on the night. An exception was the 2005 entry, which finished tenth in the semi final. However, it did even better in the final finishing fifth from a late draw.
NovÄlam Latvijai un Musiqq panÄkumus un veiksmi Düsseldorf!
