TVE, the Spanish national broadcaster has confirmed to ESCToday that Spain will participate at the forthcoming 2018 Eurovision Song Festival in Lisbon next year.

In 2017 Spain selected its Eurovision entry via a national final leading to Manel Navarro‘s victory and winning the golden ticket to Kyiv with Do it for your lover. Unfortunately Spain came last in the Grand Final continuing the bad spell of poor results in the competition. We must not forget the country has not made it to the Top 5 since 1995.

TVE is yet to reveal the mechanism it will use to select its Eurovision act and entry for Lisbon. Rumour has it that Spain will revert back to Operacion Triufo in order to select its Eurovision candidate for ESC 2018 as the talent show returns to TVE this year. Spain selected its Eurovision act via Operacion Triunfo in 2002, 2003 and 2004.

The Spanish broadcaster is set to reveal more details regarding its Eurovision 2018 project and plans in due course.

Spain in Eurovision

Spain debuted in Eurovision in 1961 and has won the competition twice (1968, 1969). The country enjoyed much success in its early days, but now seems to have had a reverse in fortunes. We must not forget the country has not made it to the TOP 5 since 1995.

The Iberian country has only made it twice to the Top 10 in the last decade, namely in 2012 and 2014 with Pastora Soler and Ruth Lorenzo respectively.

Eurovision 2018

The 2018 Eurovision Song Contest is scheduled to be held on 8, 10 and 12 May in Lisbon, Portugal.

The deadline for broadcasters to officially apply for Eurovision 2018 concludes by mid September. Hereafter, countries have a grace period to confirm their participation or withdraw their application without a penalty.

The final list of the 2018 Eurovision participating countries is expected to be released by the EBU later during the year.
