Alex Panayi, the Cypriot singer, has released his latest single There is love, with which he tried to represent Cyprus in the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest. The single has been digitally released and all proceeds will go to the support of Alzheimer's disease.

Alex Panayi is a well known figure among fans of the Eurovision Song Contest having represented his homeland Cyprus twice already and having taken part as a backing vocalist on numerous occasions, including Greece's winning song in 2005. Tonight, Alex is once again on Eurovision stage supporting Sakis Rouvas in the backing vocals.

Earlier this year, Alex Panayi took part in the Cypriot pre-selection for the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest with There is love, a song he wrote and penned himself. From the beginning, Alex had stated that he intended to release the song, which was dedicated to his mother, and offer all proceeds to the support of patients of Alzheimer's Disease.

"It was a great shock to me and my family when the doctor told us: "your mother is undoubtedly suffering from Alzheimer's disease"." Alex Panayi states. "We had no idea how to deal with the news, we hardly even knew what this ailment meant… Here we are 8 years later, saddened by her deterioration, but wiser from the experience, my mother is still with us, still walking and talking and mostly in a good mood thanks to the excellent care taking my 82-year-old father has provided her, and lately with the valuable assistance of the Kaimakli day care center for Alzheimer patients, in Nicosia, Cyprus, free of charge. Our story is one of thousands in Cyprus and perhaps millions around the world, and I would like to share it with you through this song that I dedicate to my mother Klery and my father Panos, who have given me everything I could possibly need in this world: the gift of LOVE." he concludes.

This is one of many actions planned to raise funds and awareness internationally on the disease plaguing millions of families worldwide. The world wide funding project is already supported by Rotary clubs internationally.

Thanks to Johnny Logan and Hold me now I fell in love with the Eurovision Song Contest, a love that's been going strong ever since with undiminished passion. My first memories date back to 1977 and the lyrics of Rock bottom, Dschinghis Khan and A ba ni bi are still engraved in my brain. I joined esctoday.com in 2006 as a junior editor after being invited by Barry Viniker, I soon became Senior Editor and during the 2007 contest in Helsinki I was appointed Head of Communications. Today I hold the post of Head of Human Resources and I am proud to be working with the best editorial team in the world.
