The singer

Krassimir Avramov is a graduate of the NATFIZ, the National National Academy for Theatrical and Film Arts, where he studied pantomime. His debut as a singer came in 1997 with the release of his first album. It was a huge success in Bulgaria, where it topped the charts – maybe because of his unusual vocal style. He later made his way to the United States, where he wonthe Superstar of the year award for his album Popera at the L.A. awards.

He also has famous fans. Singer and soul legend Lionel Ritchie said about him: "When I first heard his voice I thought it was computer enhanced or something. But when I heard him live…man, it really blew me away. He is truly a rare talent."

He entered the Bulgarian national selection for the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest with the song Illusion and he got a wildcard from the broadcaster and directly entered the semi final. He proceeded and won the final. He is the first male solo performer representing Bulgaria. His backing singers will be Petya Buyuklieva and Ani Lozanova.

The national selection

Bulgaria had the most complicated national selection this year again including nine heats, three quarter finals a semi final and a grand final. However, due to many wildcards, only few artist that originally competed in the heats made it to the final. Semi final wildcard entrant Krassimir Avramov won the national final by a landslide getting 55.25% of the televotes ahead of Poli Genova, who finished second with 11.74%.

Bulgaria in the Eurovision Song Contest

Bulgaria debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2005. After unsuccessful attempts in the first two years, Bulgaria madeit to the final in 2007 and finished fifth overall. Last year, the country was eliminated in the second semi final but, just like FYR Macedonia, finished ahead of the juryjokerSweden in the televoting.
