All entries in the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest are known, but the actual contest is still six weeks away. As a warm-up, we introduce one of the entries every day in random order. Part nineteen is dedicated to the entry from Moldova.

The song

Hora din Moldova is a folkloristicup-tempo dance song following a traditional structure. Through the lyrics, the singer invites the listeners to dance the Hora with her,a traditional dance from the Balkans that is performed by a group of people in a circle. Israeli and Serbian representatives have already sung about their national versions of this dance in 1982 and 2008 respectively.

The singer

Nelly Ciobanuhad her debut as a musician in 1993, when she was 18 years old and formedthe duo Master Dinamit with her brother. However, she became famous over the following years as a successful participant in countless music festivals. She won the Morning Star festival in 1994 and would later finish second in the Yalta 98 festival in Ukraine. In 2009, she took the victory in the Discovery festival in Bulgaria in 1999 as wells as in Slavic Bazaar festival in Belarus, the Spring of April festival in North Korea.

In 2005, when Moldova debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest, Nelly Ciobanu tried to represent her country for the first time. With the song One more time, she finished second behind Zdob si Zdub. On Christmas eve the same year, her first daughter was born. In 2009, she entered the Moldovan national final again and could win this time with the song Hora din Moldova.

Nelly Ciobanu is a graduate of the Tiraspol music college. She was on tour with many international stars like Patricia Kass, who will represent France this year, and Michael Bolton. At her concerts, she performs songs in eleven different languages including Romanian, English, Russian, Italian and Korean.

The national selection

Moldova went for a classic national final again. 20 acts, that had been chosen by internet voting out of the songs submitted to the broadcaster, competed in the show. The winner was chosen by a mix of jury voting, televoting and a special jury formed by TVM. Nelly Ciobanu was the favourite of all three and was the clear winner of this selection.

Moldova in the Eurovision Song Contest

Moldova entered the Eurovision Song Contest in 2005 and immediately finished second in the semi final and sixth in the final, which is still the country's best result. Another top ten placing followed in 2007, while in 2008 the country missed the final for the first time.
