United Kingdom: four Eurovision acts to the semi final

The second elimination show in the United Kingdom's selection for the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest was held tonight. Six acts each performed an international hit and the televoters sent the top three directly to the next round. Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber than decided who of the bottom two contestants was eliminated from the show.

Those were the top three entrants as decided by the televoters:

  • Jade
  • Mark
  • The Twins

From the remaining two acts, Andrew Lloyd Webber decided that the Emperors of Soul remain in the competition while Charlotte was eliminated.

The esctoday.com poll voters agreed with the results: Charlotte placed last in the poll with 5.0%.

The United Kingdom was represented in the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest by Andy Abraham, who finished equal 23rd and hence last with Even if. Nevertheless, the country is directly qualified for the final of the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest because of the 'big4' rule.

Speaking after the show, Andrew Lloyd Webber said: “What I really believe is that you’d find it very difficult when we got to that tough city called Moscow. It will be a zoo there it really will and I think you’d find it really tough. But what I do promise is if you come back in a year’s time I will see you again and I think you will have a really serious career. You need now to get all the experience you can get. Go for it Charlotte.”

Charlotte said: “I’m a bit upset but it’s been an amazing experience and I’ve met so many amazing people. It’s been a journey for me and I’ve learnt so much and I think I’m a better performer because of it. I am young, so hopefully this is just the start for me.”
