Latvia won a place in the Eurovision Song Contest 2002 after initially failing to rank high enough in the contest earlier this year in Copenhagen. EBU's Christine Marchal confirmed that to ESCTODAY this afternoon.

“It is true that Portugal withdrew and that Latvia confirmed its participation”, Marcal said. The EBU has not heard anything of possible other resigns, such as Macedonia and Israel. Both countries have internal problems.

Although Latvia and The Netherlands had the same number of points, the sixteen points scored by Arnis Mednis came from two eight point, the Dutch scored no higher than six points. EBU rules place Latvia ahead.
