Russia: The story behind Dima Bilan's Believe

Dima Bilan, the Russian star, will be representing his country for the second time in the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest with a song written by Jim Beanz, American composer, singer and producer who has worked with Britney Spears, Nelly Furtado and other global stars. Dima spoke about his song and the inspiration behind it and stated that the version heard in the Russian national final is not the finalised one as some improvements are underway.

"My song was made in just 2 days."Dima says, "but these were such magical days, in which we gave all of our energy, all our emotions and feelings. I composed the song with Jim Beans, famous songwriter, composer and producer. Personally I wrote the refrain."

"When I came to Jim Beanz, I told him: "You know, Jim, now there are many problems in my life. I suppose I didn't deserve them, because I have always been honest and tried to do everything in a proper way. I don't know, what it is: maybe it is a cross, a test of popularity… Jim, let us write the text about belief.. belief not in myself, but in me, in my fans. That is why we made this song." Dima refers, among other things, to the story about him losing his rights to his stage name, something which his management assures us will never happen.

Will there be any changes in the song? "It is not the final version." Dima says, " We are going to improve it, make it better before the contest. And of course you will see an interesting stage act, which ought to impress you! Now it won't be a grand piano!" he laughs.

And Dima continues: "As a joke many people ask us, who is going to appear out of it (meaning the grand piano like the one he had on stage in Athens): Yana, my producer, with the papers, proving, that Dima Bilan is a legal entity, or lawyers, or who else? (still laughing). But seriously, though there won't be a grand piano, but something else really worthy!"

Dima Bilan- Believe

Lyrics and music by Dima Bilan & Jim Beanz
Produced by Jim Beanz

Even when the thunder and storm begins
I'll be standing strong like a tree in the wind
Nothing's gonna move this mountain
Or change my direction
I'm falling off that sky and I'm all alone
The courage that's inside gonna break my fall
Nothing's gonna deem my light within

But if I keep going on
It will never impossible, not today

Cause I've got something to believe in
As long as I'm breathing
There is not a limit to what I can dream
Cause I've got something to believe in
Mission to keep climbing
Nothing else can stop me if I just believe
And I believe in me

Even when the world tries to pull me down
Tell me that I can't, try to turn me around
I wont let them put my fire out, without no!

But if I keep going on
It will never impossible, not today

Cause I've got something to believe in
As long as I'm breathing
There is not a limit to what I can dream
Cause I've got something to believe in
Mission to keep climbing
Nothing else can stop me if I just believe
And I believe:

I can do it all
Open every door
Turn unthinkable to reality
You'll see- I can do it all and more!

Believing

Mission to keep climbing
Nothing else can stop me

And I believe in me.

Thanks to Johnny Logan and Hold me now I fell in love with the Eurovision Song Contest, a love that's been going strong ever since with undiminished passion. My first memories date back to 1977 and the lyrics of Rock bottom, Dschinghis Khan and A ba ni bi are still engraved in my brain.

I joined esctoday.com in 2006 as a junior editor after being invited by Barry Viniker, I soon became Senior Editor and during the 2007 contest in Helsinki I was appointed Head of Communications. Today I hold the post of Head of Human Resources and I am proud to be working with the best editorial team in the world.
