Malta Song for Europe 2008, the Maltese national final for the Eurovision Song Contest, was held tonight. Eight singers took part and televoting and jury decided to send Morena with the song Vodka written by Philip Vella and Gerard James Borg to Belgrade.

The top three:

  1. MorenaVodka
  2. Claudia FanielloCaravaggio
  3. Claudia FanielloSunrise

Philip Vella and Gerard James Borg have already been the songwriting team for Malta on four occasions: in 2000 with Desire (8th performed by Claudette Pace), in 2002 with 7th wonder (2nd by Ira Losco), in 2004 with On again… off again (12th by Julie & Ludwig) and in 2007, where Olivia Lewis did not make it to the final of the Eurovison Song Contest with Vertigo finishing 25th in the semi final. Philip Vella was also a backing singer for Malta in the 1997 Eurovision Song Contest.

Malta finished 2nd in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2005 but was not very succesful the last two years: Fabrizio Faniello finished last in the final in Athens with I do while Olivia Lewis finished 25th in the semi final in Helsinki, thus not reaching the final with Vertigo. In 2008, the Maltese representative will enter one of the semi finals.
