The ups and downs of Alain Barrière

Tonight, January 14, on “France 3”, Alain Barrière, France's 1963 Eurovision Song Contest performer, will be one of the guests of the very popular talk show “Vie privée, vie publique”, presented by Mireille Dumas.

"The ups and downs of celebrity" is the theme of tonight's Vie privée, vie publique show, which will have 5 other guests, 2 being singers (Caroline Loeb and Marcel Amont, the latter having a song in the 1980 French Eurovision selection).

Aged 72, Alain Barrière had his first success back in 1961 but became very popular with the song he wrote, composed and sang for France in London, Elle était si jolie. The "disappointing" 5th place didn't prevent the song from becoming a real classic in the French show business. Barrière went on with other successful songs; for instance Ma vie in 1964, which was covered in German by Udo Jürgens (Frag' nie) and Tu t'en vas, a duet with Noëlle Cordier (France 67) in 1975, which was also a German hit, by Adam & Eve (Du gehst for, and later by Ireen Sheer & Bernhard Brink).

In spite of a promising career, Alain Barrière had long periods without any success and, still worst, periods to live abroad, actually in Canada, for not payingtaxes in France. Many years though, the man returned to France and released new albums, mostly compilations with re-recordings. He also wrote a biography and still tours. He was on the Palais des Congrès stage last December and has a long list of concerts to be given for 2008.
