Gerard James Borg, the four time winner of Malta Song For Europe, has managed to see a staggering five entries pass to this year's semi final in collaboration with Philip Vella. After the conclusion of the press conference announcing the competing songs, esctoday.com contacted him to talk about this year's competition.
Gerard James Borg has worked on five songs in Malta Song For Europe 2008 with Phillip Vella. They are Vodka, Casanova, Superhero, Tangled and Throw your stones. We asked Gerard:
Your song titles and lyrics are different to most songwriters. Do you deliberately find titles that are different and original?
"I like to be different and as innovative as I can. Being original is important and getting people to think about the songs is quite a kick for me".
You have five songs in this year's competition, were you expecting to do this well?
"I think Eurovision is one big lottery. You can have a very good song that doesn't make it, you can have an average song that people love. Whatever happens happens, I just try to write good songs."
The five songs will be performed by four different singers, what are they like to work with?
"All of them are very nice to work with and have been very open to listen to suggestions. I like people who are willing to listen and then come up with their own opinions. We have invested in young singers and it has been very rewarding."
What can we expect from the songs:
"There's a variety of songs, I can't say too much at the moment, you'll have to wait and see, but I'm excited".
Malta tends to vote for the singer that deserves to win rather than the song. Do you think someone in the line-up has more chance than anyone before the songs are heard?
"Could be laughs ."
esctoday.com would like to with Gerard James Borg luck with his songs and look forward to hearing the 17 Maltese acts at the national final on 26th January.
