Uribarri: “Better than last year for Spain”

Maybe the strongest symbol of Eurovision Song Contest in Spain, the long-standing and popular Eurovision commentator for the Spanish broadcaster TVE, J. L. Uribarri, gave his opinion of Spain performing in place twelve in Riga.

Jean Luis Uribarri is well-known for always guessing which countries will receive points from another country, something many Spanish fans of the contest strongly dislike. Last year he wanted to retire from his job as being the Spanish Eurovision commentator for TVE, but the audience of Operación Triunfo “didn't allow him”, cause in that case they would miss him too much. Something which wouldn't be good in a year when the Spanish interest in the contest was higher than ever.

In an interview with the Spanish Eurovision website eurofestival.net just after the draw of the running order was made Friday, he gave his personal opinion on what it will mean for Spain having to perform as country number twelve in the Latvian capital: “The Spanish starting position in Riga will be fairly better than what was the case in Tallinn, though it would have been a lot better if we would perform right after the commercial break, between place 14th and 20th, although the last years the winners have performed even later than that.”

According to eurofestival.net, TVE has signed a contract with the producer of Operación Triunfo, the company Gestmusic, giving the broadcaster the right to select the Spanish Eurovision artist through the Operación Triunfo concept during at least four years untill the 2004-2005 season.
