The German newspaper Die Tageszeitung (taz) asked their readers today to write some lyrics to their entry for the German preselection to Eurovision Song Contest 2003. The newspaper has already signed a female singer and has two melodies, to which the readers can supply lyrics.

From November 23rd, the first melody can be heard via telephone or a special internet site. The second melody will be published one week later. The notes of both songs will also be published in the newspaper and on the net. Readers are asked to write some lyrics to it and submit them before December 21st.

An internal taz jury will then select 25 songlyrics and on January 3rd, finally a jury with “prominent members”, as the newspaper states, will select the winner.

The name of the singer will be published November 30th. She will present the chosen song with the winning lyrics at the German national final Countdown Grand Prix, which will be held in Kiel, March 7th.

In an accompying article in today’s edition of the left-wing newspaper, potential songwriters were suggested to write lyrics about the “six most important themes of pop music, which are: love, love, love, love, love and sex”. This can be seen as a try to prevent the readers from writing about politics, the article stated that “outside of Germany, political issues in notes are not received very well”.
