Following his comments this weekend, DJ Bobo hosted a press conference on Wednesday October 11th to announce that he has officially applied to Swiss broadcaster Schweizer Fernsehen (SF) to represent his home country at the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest.
DJ Bobo, born René Baumann is 38 years old, held a press conference in Stans, Switzerland today, where he announced that he has officially applied to SF to represent his country at the Eurovision Song Contest.
Holding up a copy of the application form, downloaded from the broadcaster's website, the successful DJ and producer told reportersthat "it's a shame for Swiss tax payer money from the tv licence fees to go to fund a foreign act and the people should resist that"*. He has not yet submitted the song, which will be sent to SF by November 30th. All that Bobo has said so far regarding the song is that "it certainly won't be a ballad"*.
With reference to the Eurovision Song Contest voting procedure, Bobo spoke encouragingly for Swiss and German viewers to support each other's entry, he told journalists that "we are waiting from 12 points from Germany"*.
DJ Bobo has a string of successul hit records to his name, including gold records in Switzerland, Germany and Israel. His 2003 hit Chihuahua was used in a Spanish Coca-Cola advert and when re-released, became the second highest selling song globally that year. He has had three number one hit singles and six number one albums in Switzerland. His World in motion album, released in 1996, is ranked in the top 40 albums of all time, after remaining on the Swiss chart for a staggering 67 weeks. You can find a full list of his album and single releases at the end of this article.
An internal selection jury will decide in December which applicant will go forward to represent Switzerland at the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest in Helsinki. Due to a poor result in the final of the competition in 2006, Switzerland will have to qualify from the semifinal on May 10th 2007.
