According to the website Vertele, the Spanish Broadcaster TVE selected the song performed by Las Ketchup in order to represent Spain at the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest in Athens, Greece. TVE did not yet comment on the information.
Las Ketchup consists of three female sisters (Pilar, Lola and Lucía Muñoz) from Cordoba, who recorded a big hit three years ago with the song Aserejé.
According to vertele.com, it seems that the title of the Las Ketchup song is Bloody Mary, which is also the title of their second album produced by Manuel Ruiz, who also composed the hit Aserejé. Among the 40 songs picked from the 245 songs submitted to TVE, there were famous performers such as Azucar Moreno, who represented Spain at the 1990 Eurovision Song Contest in Zagreb, Former Yugoslavia, and came 5th with 96 points.
Now, TVE expects to improve the audience rates (see the figures below) of the Eurovision Song Contest in 2006 with a worldwide famous group as last year was quite disappoionting compared to 2004, 2003, and 2002 when the Spanish representative was connected to a popular programme like Operación Triunfo.
Eurovision Song Contest 2005: 4.712.000 viewers
Eurovision Song Contest 2004: 6.826.000 viewers
Eurovision Song Contest 2003: 8.790.0000 viewers
Eurovision Song Contest 2002: 12.755.000 viewers
Eurovision Song Contest 2001: 5.614.000 viewers
Eurovision Song Contest 2000: 4.056.000 viewers
Last year, Son de sol placed 21st in Kyiv at the 50th Eurovision Song Contest with their song Brujería. As Spain is one of the 'Big-4' countries, it will enter the final of the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest directly.
Our colleagues of EurovisionSpain asked TVE for an official statement. As soon as new information reaches us, we'll let you know!
