Dorians have performed their entry to this year’s Eurovision Song Contest live for the first time.
The band took to the stage as part of an event called Live together on one stage at the Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concert Complex in Yerevan, Armenia, on Saturday 6 April. They were joined by former Armenian representative, Sirusho. The show’s promoters, Deem Communications, hoped the combination of these two acts would show case the finest Armenian rock, pop and folk music.
Spectators at the show received the first live performance of Lonely planet, the song that will represent Armenia this May in Malmö, extremely well. The band also performed their other famous songs, including In fog and This is our world before giving the stage to Sirusho.
Sirusho performed Qele qele, the song with which she represented Armenia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 in Belgrade. She also performed several songs for which she is well-known in Armenia before joining Dorians for the show’s finale.
Prior to Saturday’s performance, Dorians had told Aysor, the Armenian news site, they hoped the fusion of their rock and Sirusho’s folk-pop was an interesting experiment and that they hoped the audience would like it. Lead singer Gor Sujyan added the concert was a good opportunity for the band to peform in front of a large, live audience ahead of Eurovision in May, as they had not done so for a while. Many of Dorians’ fans took to social networking sites after the show to compliment both the song and lead singer Gor’s delivery of it.
Sirusho finished in fourth position in the grand final of the Eurovision Song Contest in Belgrade, 2008. Since then, she has gone on to marry the son of Armenia’s former president, Robert Kocharyan, and release an album, Havatum em. Last December, she released a brand-new dance track, PreGomesh, but has not ruled out a return to Eurovision in the future.
Dorians will represent Armenia at Eurovision this coming May. They will perform Lonely planet in the second semi-final on Thursday 16 May. The song was co-written by Tony Iommi, guitarist for British heavy-metal band, Black Sabbath.
