International jury selected the 12 finalists out of 25 entries, which YLE jury had selected from 476 songs, which were submitted to the Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE by the deadline. The international jury consisted of five members: Maria Guzenina (Finland), Tobias Larsson (Sweden), Jörgen de Mylius (Denmark), Marko Reikop (Estonia) and Niamh White (Ireland).

11 songs will be performed in Finnish, one song in Italian. Eight of the finalists are orignially from Finland, four of them are from other countries.

The Finnish final will take place in Tampere on January 26th, 2002.
