EBU Secretary General Jean Stock was the Union's representative at the 50th anniversary of its Cypriot member: the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation.
The EBU website states that for the occasion, Director General Marios Mavrikiose retraced the steps of the CyBC over the past 50 years.
The first radio programmes were broadcast on 4 October 1953 with television following four years later.
Today, CyBC has 3 radio and TV channels respectively, with one of its programmes broadcast via satellite.
The Secretary General of the EBU remarked that two anniversaries had in fact coincided: this year not only marked CyBC's 50th anniversary, but also its 25th year as a Member of the European Broadcasting Union. Despite the 25 years as EBU member, Cyprus joined the Euroviison Song Contest in 1981 with a remarkable 5th place.
This coincidence was responded to by the CyBC choir, who went on to give a rendition of the Eurovision signature tune.
