SVT announced today one more song that will feature in Melodifestivalen 2011, the Swedish selection for the Eurovision Song Contest, this being Babsan with Ge mig en Spanjor (Give me a Spaniard).
Babsan joins the list of drag acts to have enteredMelodifestivalen, most notable in recentMelodifestivalenhistory are After Dark, with their 3rdplace finish in 2004.Indeed the songwriting team ofLarry Forsberg, Sven-Inge Sjöberg, Lennart Wastesson were behind After Dark’s 2004 entry ‘La Dolce Vita,’ their most successful entry in 5 previous attempts.
Babsan, alternativelyLars-Åke Wilhelmsson is 52 years old and has previously performed in musicals including ‘Rent’ and ‘Grease,’ as well as with the Babsan character.Babsan featured in as a character in the filmLivet är en schlager (Life is a Schlager) that was a hit Swedish film at the start of the 21st Century.
Sweden has now announced 13 names forMelodifestivalen2011, and the Webbjokercompetition to select two Melodifestivalen entries for 2011 is scheduled to finish on Monday 8thNovember.
Sweden will compete in the semi finals in Eurovision 2011 after Anna Bergendahl finished 11thin the second semi final in Oslo at Eurovision 2010.
