Dutch artist Sandra Reemer, who graced the Eurovision stage four times, would have celebrated her 67th birthday on 17 October. The singer passed away on the 6 June this year, but will be remembered through a special auction and a fashion exhibition.
The special auction was a wish of Sandra Reemer, releasing some of her personal belongings to the public. Iconic clothing, including Eurovision dresses, paintings, a specialized dressing-table designed by Jan des Bouvrie, and the grand piano on which her 1979 Eurovision entry Colorado was composed, and many other items, will be available through online auctioneer Catawiki.
Besides the auction, a special exhibition opened Wednesday afternoon, 18 October, initiated by Sandra Reemer’s good friend, Dutch designer Addy van den Krommenacker. Various gala dresses, including Sandra Reemer’s first Eurovision outfit from 1972, may be admired in Addy van den Krommenacker’s store in Den Bosch, in the Verwersstraat (Verwers-street).
About Sandra Reemer
Barbara Alexandra Reemer was born in Bandung, former Dutch Indonesia, having Dutch, Chinese and Indonesian (Javanese) roots. Affectionately called Xandra, her first name was changed to Sandra by the nuns at which she went to school after she moved to the Netherlands, as they considered the X to be a “diobolical” letter.
Starting singing at an early age, and already participating in the Dutch national selection for Eurovision in 1970, Sandra Reemer graced the Eurovision stage four times: in 1972 together with singer Dries Holten with which she formed the duo Sandra & Andres (Als het om de liefde gaat, 4th place), in 1976 solo on home soil in Den Haag/The Hague (The party’s over, 9th place), in 1979 as lead singer of the group initiative Xandra (Colorado, 12th place, and a huge hit in the Scandinavian countries), and in 1983 as backing vocalist for Bernadette (Sing me a song, 7th place).
A true Eurovision star, Sandra Reemer passed away due to breast cancer on the 6 June 2017. She will always be a treasured member of the Eurovision family.
