Riga will have an intensive cultural week

The official 2003 Eurovision Song Contest's website, eurovision.tv, revealed today the plans for the cultural events in Riga, scheduled for the contest's week, this May.

Earlier this year rumours suggested the Riga municipality would back out of it's plans for the 2003 Eurovision Song Contest's week, but now according to eurovision.tv, Riga municipality is eager, more than ever, to give the city's residents and visitors a very hectic and entertaining week.

Among the scheduled events, are hot-air ballon flights, a long table with traditional Latvian cuisine for Eurovision guests, free concerts along the streets of Riga. In addition,in the second week of May, information facilities will be placed in Dome Square to provide information about the Eurovision contest, as well as to provide brochures, a Eurovision newsletter and Eurovision souvenirs. Souvenir stands will also be located in several places in Old Rīga, as well as in major department stores.

The major event of the week seems to be the one on the final's day itself, May 24th. Along the 11th November shorline of the River Daugava an entertainment carnival will lead the residents of Riga to a central stage above it the final contest will be broadcasted on a huge screen. During the broadcast of the contest there will be an open link between the contest's venue, Skonto Hall, and the shoreline. The Latvian results will be given from that location, where fireworks will lit the sky after the winner of the contest will be announced.
