In an interview with the Azeri press agency in Azerbaijan, Ruslana has backed the country to join the Eurovision Song Contest. During the interview, Ruslana claims that the competition is not politicised and that nations support one another. She then immediately suggested a likely exchange of votes, pointing out that Azerbaijan and Turkey “would probably support each other”.
Talking about the resurgence of the Eurovision Song Contest, Ruslana explains:
"The Eurovision song contest is expanding and becoming more popular. The contest was less popular not long ago, but it is becoming popular again recently. It was regarded that this is the Contest for young talents, wanna-be populars and start profession. But now a lot of popular and prominent stars join the contest."
Asked about whether the Eurovision Song Contest is politicised, Ruslana says:
"No. I can say unambiguously that Eurovision is not a politicized contest. The countries are supporting each other mentally. If Azerbaijan participates in the contest, you and Turkey will probably support each other."
Azeri participation at the Eurovision Song Contest appeared to move a step closer this summer when Azerbaijan Public Television claimed to have become full members of the EBU shortly after AzTV were denied membership. Should their membership be confirmed andtheyapply to enter the Eurovision Song Contest, Azerbaijan could make their debut in Belgrade next year.
