Yesterday, the first edition of the Eurovision Dance Contest took place in London. Katja Koukkula and Jussi Väänänen from Finland were the clear winners ahead of the representatives from Ukraine and Ireland. Not only because it is a new contest, a close look on the voting reveals some interesting and funny details.

Quickies

  • Finland was the country that had to wait the longest for its first victory in the Eurovision Song Contest but won the dance contest on the first attempt. On the other hand, Switzerland won the first edition of the Eurovision Song Contest but came last in London with zero points.
  • Austria, Ireland, Ukraine and Finland received points from all the other countries
  • Finland received top 4 marks from almost all countries, only Germany and the United Kingdom gave four points each
  • Nine of the countries, which means about 3/5, got12 points at least once
  • Like in the Eurovision Song Contest 2006 (semi final and final) and 2007, Lithuania got its only 12 points from Ireland
  • Ukraine, runner-up, received 12 points five times, twice more than the winners from Finlande

Running order

The country that performed first, Switzerland, finished last, which has never happened at the Eurovision Song Contest. On the other hand, the countries in the top 4 all performed in the second half. Furthermore, from the countries in the second half, only Sweden did not finish in the top 10.All in all, this showsthat the fact that the lines for voting were alreadyopened at the beginning of the show did not affect the results. In the Junior EurovisionSong Contest 2006, when this was tried for the first time, the situation was similar.

Facts that show that diaspora does(not) exist

Some countries received their highest mark from neighbouring countries: Russia (12 from Ukraine and 10 from Finland),United Kingdom (7 from Ireland), Austria (10 from Germany), Germany (10 from Austria and Switzerland), Spain (12 from Portugal), Poland (12 from Germany)and Denmark (8 from Sweden), Sweden (8 from Finland). It should be mentioned that none of these countries finished in the top 3. Poland finished fourth but also got 10 points three times.

On the other hand, some countries received their highest marks from countries that are definitely no neighbours: Ireland (12 from Denmark as well as 10 from Poland and Russia), the Netherlands (12 from Greece) and Lithuania (12 from Ireland). Furthermore, some participants did not get too many points from their said-to-be friendly neighbours: Sweden (5 from Denmark), Switzerland (no points from Germany and Austria)and Denmark (4 from Finland).

The back-up jury

The only country that used the back-up jury was Greece with a remarkable result: the 12 points went to the Netherlands, by far the highest mark for the country of the evening. Furthermore, the 7 points to Spain were their second highest rating, thetwo points to Austria (alongwith the two points from the United Kingdom) the lowest of the eveing. Otherwise, the televotingin the othercountries and the jury largely agreed, especially regarding the 10 points to the winners from Finland.
