Marija goes for 2 in a row?

An interesting article appeared yesterday in Serbian newspaper Kurir that claims Marija Serifovic is being lined up to represent Switzerland a year after winning the Eurovision Song Contest for her native Serbia.

The article claims that the new Eurovision Song Contest champion was contacted by Ingrid Deltenre, General Secretary of Swiss broadcaster SF DRS, about the possibility of representing Switzerland in Serbia next year. It goes on to state that Marija Šerifović did not reject the Swiss offer, but is currently busy preparing her new album and giving concerts. She is said to be considering the proposal and will give a decision in the near future.

esctoday.com has contacted theSwiss broadcaster to investigate this and will be asking Marija directly later this week. Marija has stated on record that she would represent another country and would do it with the same pride that she took in representing Serbia. Earlier this month Swiss broadcaster SF DRS stated to be looking forward to an established singer to represent the country in Belgrade next year. The nationality of the performer is of no importance.

So far, only Johnny Logan has won the Eurovision Song Contest twice as a singer. Should Marija go on to represent Switzerland and win, she would create several new records, including becoming the first singer to win back-to-back contests, the first woman to win the competition twice and the first singer to win the competition for two countries. Elizabeth Andreassen has come the closest to this, winning the competition as part of Bobbysocks for Norway in 1985, three years after finishing 8th for her native Sweden. She also holds the record for coming closest to being the first woman to win the competition twice, taking second place in 1996 with her aunting ballad I evighet.

With the rumour mill already in full swing for next year, Marija may face competition for those records from Carola, tipped to enter Melodifestivalen with the chance of representing Sweden for a fourth time and looking for her second Eurovision Song Contest victory. Helena Paparizou is also being tipped as a potential representative of Sweden, and would also be bidding for the records of first two-time female winner and first singer to win for two countries after her 2005 victory for Greece.
