As previously reported here on esctoday.com, DR's financial problems has lead to worries that Denmark might withdraw from the Eurovision Song Contest. A couple of weeks ago they however confirmed their support for the competition. It now appears that they may not be allowed to enter next year with the threat of expulsion from the EBU.

According to politiken.dk the problem is an EBU rule stating that the broadcaster must show at least 200 hours of sport a year, sports news not included. Due to the financial problems the Danish broadcaster is facing they have decided to cut down on all major sports events and is working towards selling their rights for events they have already bought.

EBU director Bjørn Erichsentold politiken.dk that “if DR chose to remove the sport they will most likely no longer be a member of the EBU“. Despite the fact that DR will no longer be able to live up to the 200 hours a year of sport their media director Lars Grarup don't think it will have any consequences: EBU tells me that they will not kick out existing members".
