Terry Wogan with special lifetime award

BBC broadcaster Terry Wogan (UK Eurovision Song Contest commentator) was last night presented with a Special Lifetime Achievement Award by the Irish Prime Minister, Mr. Bertie Ahern.

Sir Michael TerenceWogan received the award at the Limerick Person of the Year ceremony in the Clarion hotel in the city. Mr Wogan (68) was honored by theorganisers of the event chose forhis achievements as a broadcaster and his work for charity. Accompanied by his wife, Helen, Mr Wogan said Limerick, his hometown, had put him in the position he is in today.

"What Limerick man would not be honoured to receive such an award from a proud and historic city. I spent the first 15 years of my life here. Limerick made me." said Mr Wogan

Mr Wogan left Limerick for Dublin with his parents before embarking on a distinguished career. It is estimated that todayhe islistened to by 8m radio listeners throughout the UK. He has been the official commentator of the Eurovision Song Contest for BBC TV year after year since 1980 and he is internationally known for his witty though sometimes caustic remarks.

Mr Ahern said he was delighted that Limerick recognised Mr Wogan's distinguished career in broadcasting, calling him a "wonderful ambassador for Limerick and Ireland".

Meanwhile, Irish rower Paul Gleeson was last night named the 2006 Limerick Person of the Year.
