Latvia's government decided on Tuesday to provide the necessary financial guarantees for the Baltic country to host the Eurovision song contest next year, a government spokesman said.

The state television company LTV will organise the event and the government will guarantee that 2.9 million euro is available.

Despite the lack of an adequate venue in the capital Riga, Prime Minister Andris Berzins has stated his determination that Latvia will host the contest. Three locations in Riga, one in the nearby seaside resort of Jurmala, and one in the western port of Ventspils are in the running as venues for the Eurovision Song Contest.

Earlier this week it appeared that without financial support from the Latvian governement, LTV could not take care of the organisation of the contest. With this assurance it becomes more and more likely that LTV will inform the EBU before June 10 they will organise the event.
