Emmelie de Forest, the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest 2013, has been awarded the Årets Europæer award (The European of the year Award) by the Danish European Movement.

The award has been running for ten years and aims to recognize the positive contributions made towards Europe on Danish soil.

Former winners include the Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel, HRH Prince Henrik and the German author Günter Grass.

Emmelie de Forest  is the first singer to win the award and says she is honored to share an award with some of the most influential people in Europe.

I am very happy, proud and honored. Some really talented people have previously won the award so it means a lot to me- Emmelie commented after learning about her award.

The Grand Prix ( The Eurovision Song Contest)  embraces the whole of Europe, and although it is a competition, you can see that it brings Europeans together to celebrate-  Emmelie added.

You can see the video of the announcement  on DR’s official website here.

Emellie gave Denmark their third Eurovision Song Contest win when she placed first with her entry Only Teardrops in May 2013, winning 281 points in the process. You can see her winning performance below.
