As the contest saw out the 90’s and the 20th Century we saw Eurovision return to the holy city of Jerusalem in the wake of Dana International’s historic victory. Eurovision was won that year by what some critics call a “typical Eurovision song” Take me to your heaven was sung by the then Charlotte Nillson, now Perrelli. She took Sweden to first place singing out the decade with a song that really incorporated the best of all stereotypical Eurovision songs. Really Charlotte Nillson set the template for the current schlager sound with this song whilst the piano rift shaded echoes of Waterloo and a bygone era.  It was nice to see that some things would remain familiar in a world that was evolving faster than Dana International’s costume changes.
