Romania and the Eurovision Song Contest
Romania got off to a shaky start in the Eurovision Song Contest, with a poorly placed debut in 1994, and another near-bottom ranking for their second entry in 1998. But things looked up when their fourth entry Tell me why touched the top ten for the first time in the country's history. Since then, Romania has tasted both disappointment and success for its entries, with a high point at the 2005 contest in Kyiv when Luminita Anghel & Sistem achieved an all-time best of third with Let me try.

This year, Romania once again opted for two semifinals and a final to select its entry for the Eurovision Song Contest. The top six from each semifinal competed in the final, and the eventual winner of that contest was Mihai Traistariu with the part-English, part-Italian song Tornerò. It was a close-run contest with Mihai chosen as top by an expert jury, and second with televoters, and overall just pipping group Akcent with Jokero.

Mihai Traistariu
26-year-old Mihai had already competed in several other Romanian Eurovision Song Contest selections, initially as part of the popular group Valahia. Mihai became an extremely successful solo artist in 2004, although that counted for little in the Eurovision selection that year, where he finished almost last in the first semifinal. At the 2005 Romanian selection, Mihai finished third together with singer Nico, who was a direct competitor at this year's national contest.

Tornerò
I'm keeping your smile on my mind every day,
I'm feeling your touch on my face even while you're away
Like when was together in that dream that could had been so right, yeah!
Like when was together in that dream that could had been so right

Tornerò tornerò
La mia vita ti daro
Tornerai tornerai
Mia per sempre sempre sarai

I wonder why I should feel so empty these days
I wonder why I should fall now while you're away
We'll dance together in that dream that could have been so right, yeah!
We'll dance together in that dream that could have been so right

Tornerò tornerò
La mia vita ti daro
Tornerai tornerai
Mia per sempre sempre sarai

I'm keeping your smile in my mind,
I'm feeling your touch on my face
I just really miss you
And I wanna kiss you
And I wonder why I didn't know
When I wonder why, why I didn't know
When I wonder why, I didn't know

Tornerò tornerò
La mia vita ti daro
Tornerai tornerai
Mia per sempre sempre sarai
