Malta and the Eurovision Song Contest
Malta got off to a difficult start in Eurovision with double last places in 1971 and 1972. After a follow-up 12th place in 1975, it was not until 1991 that the Eurovision Song Contest saw Malta return, this time with a serious winning agenda, and since then, Maltese entries not to place in the top ten have been rare.
Malta's selection process for 2006 was a particularly long one, which started back in October of 2005 with the wildcard show Opportunity 2 challenge, where two of 36 candidates had the chance to win places in the Maltese final. The final itself, however, was not without problems, and the eventual winner Fabrizio Faniello had to take to the podium three times altogether due to technical glitches. It was third time lucky, however, and second time to the contest for the young Fabrizio, who had already represented Malta in 2001.

25-year-old Fabrizio had a huge Summer hit on his hands with his first Eurovision Song Contest entry for Malta, Another summer night. Despite only placing ninth in the contest, the disc received some commercial success, and saw the beginnings of an international pop career for Fabrizio, centering on Germany with some inroads made into Scandinavia. Despite coming only twelth at last year's Maltese selection, Fabrizio bounces back this year to represent Malta for a second time.
