Moira Shearer who presented the 1972 Eurovision Song Contest from the Usher Hall in Edinburgh, has died at the age of 80. The Scottish dancer, best known for her role in the film The red shoes, died in an Oxford hospital on Tuesday, reported her husband, broadcaster Ludovic Kennedy.
“She was full of spirit, and also she was very beautiful, she moved wonderfully, gracefully, as you would expect of a ballet dancer.” said Mr Kennedy, “She had become weaker after her birthday in January,” The couple were married in 1950.
Moira Shearer born in Dunfermline, Scotland, was best known as an accomplished dancer, having trained at Sadlers Well, and starred in the film The red shoes in 1948, In 1952 she gave up dancing at the age of 27 to concentrate on acting. To Eurovision fans however, she will be remembered for presenting the 1972 contest from Edinburgh.
