Bess has won the first semifinal of Eurokids 2004 in Belgium. With Laissez-les vivre, an appeal to protect the animals, Bess received one point more than runner-up Free Spirits.

After the five semifinalists performed their songs and T-Rio finished their guest performance, three juries announced their votes. The kids jury and the jury of listeners of radio station Vivacité awarded 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 points. The results of the La Une televoting counted double.

These are the results of the first semifinal of Eurokids 2004:

1. 45 points | Bess – Laissez-les vivre (Let them live)
2. 44 points | Free Spirits – Accroche-toi (Hold on)
3. 41 points | Hotvibes – Ma vraie identité (My real identity)
4. 37 points | Kevin – J'ai envie (I feel like…)
5. 33 points | B-Cocktail – L'âge d'aimer (The age of loving)

Although rock band Free Spirits won the maximum of the points from both the kids jury and La Une's televoting, Bess came out as the winner with her ballad Laissez-les vivre. Bess, a 12 year old girl from Liège, is the only one who directly qualifies for the final on 26th September. Free Spirits and Hotvibes who came second and third still have a good chance to proceed as one of the three best scoring semifinalists.

Bess' song Laissez-les vivre has been produced by Dan Lacksman, one of the members of the former electro band Telex, that represented Belgium at the Eurovision Song Contest with the legendary song Eurovision.
