As Kiev is under preparations for the 50th Eurovision Song Contest, one of the citys top chefs has come up with a dessert which will be available to thousands of visitors expected for the event next year. The dessert in question is chocolate salo, a delicacy consisting of pork fat covered in chocolate! If not overly impressed by its description, you should know that Ruslana is already a fan of the gastronomic novelty.

Salo consists of pork fat and has been enjoyed by people in Ukraine for many years. It is traditionally served in small slices, eaten with black bread, raw garlic and vodka and can be found in many market stalls around the country. At least that was the case until recently, when the chef of posh Tsarske Selo restaurant gave a twist to the Ukrainian delicacy by covering it in chocolate. For about 1.50 euros, visitors to Kiev have now the chance to buy 5 sticks of what is increasingly called the Ukrainian Snickers.

Chocolate salo is very likely to be promoted as a special Eurovision Song Contest dish next spring. Its chances have already been given a boost by this years winner, Ruslana, who apparently became a fan of the unorthodox snack when she first tasted it in her native city of Lviv: I love it because its unusual () I ate it and Im still alive, she laughed about her new indulgence. However, not everyone shares Ruslanas enthusiasm for the new snack. Dr Svetlana Fus from the Kiev Medical Research Centre warns that chocolate salo is the worst combination possible. It is worth mentioning that Ukraine has one of the highest rates of deaths from heart disease in Europe.
