Hungary’s public broadcaster, MTVA, has ommited Eurovision Song Contest 2025 from their programme once again, continuing its non-participation streak that began in 2020. The country has neither participated in nor broadcast the contest since its withdrawal ahead of the 2020 edition.
Hungary last participated in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2019, represented by Joci Pápai with the song Az én apám. The entry did not qualify for the final, finishing 12th in the first semi-final. In November 2019, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) released the list of participating countries for Eurovision 2020, notably omitting Hungary.
Since then, MTVA has not provided a public statement explaining its decision to withdraw or its continued absence from the contest.
Hungary’s Eurovision history
Hungary debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1994, achieving its best result to date with Friderika Bayer’s Kinek mondjam el vétkeimet, which finished fourth. The country has participated 17 times, with notable entries including András Kállay – Saunders – Running in 2014, which placed fifth, and Magdi Rúzsa – Unsubstantial Blues in 2007, finishing ninth.
Throughout its Eurovision history, Hungary has experienced intermittent participation, withdrawing in 1999–2004, 2006, 2010, and since 2020.
Looking ahead
As of now, MTVA has not indicated any plans to return to the Eurovision Song Contest. The broadcaster’s continued absence from both participation and broadcasting suggests that Hungary will remain outside the Eurovision community for the foreseeable future.
