TRM, the Moldovan national broadcaster, has announced today its decision to withdraw from the forthcoming Eurovision Song Contest 2025 due to artistic, economical and admistrative challenges.
TRM held a special press conference today in order to inform the assembled media that Moldova will not participate at Eurovision 2025. Hence the 2025 Moldovan national selection has been cancelled. TRM will still broadcaster the Eurovision 2025 semi-finals and Grand Final in May.
The announcement was made by Corneliu Durnescu ( TRM Deputy Director General) and and Daniela Crudu (Moldovan Head of Delegation).
Moldova debuted at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2005 and has competed every year at the event since then, with the exception of 2020 when the competition was cancelled. Hence it is very first time that the country has withdrawn from the competition.
With Moldova’s withdrawal from the Eurovision Song Contest 2025, 37 countries will be competing in Basel.
TRM’s official press release reads:
Today, January 22, the “Teleradio-Moldova” Company hosted a press conference in which it declared that the country will not participate in this year’s edition of the music competition. The announcement was made by Corneliu Durnescu, Deputy General Director of the Public Broadcaster, and by Daniela Crudu, Head of the Moldovan delegation to the Eurovision Song Contest.
The reason for the refusal to participate is the “economic, administrative and artistic challenges” faced by the public broadcaster.Corneliu Durnescu stated that: “We consulted specialists in the music field, and most of them expressed serious reservations regarding Moldova’s participation this year, in exact agreement with the opinion of the jury that TRM selected for this edition. We respect the opinions of professionals and the general public, and we understand that we must make responsible decisions that reflect the realities”.
In the context of the National Stage, Daniela Crudu claims that: “This year has highlighted certain challenges, including a decrease in public interest and the general quality of the songs and artistic performances. This has generated a negative perception among specialists and the public, underlining the need for a substantial reform in the selection process”.
The cancellation of participation in the 69th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest does not mean complete withdrawal from the competition. One of the purposes of this decision is to review the criteria and methodology for selecting the country’s representative for the international stage of the contest.TV Moldova 1 will broadcast live the semi-finals and the ESC grand final, scheduled for May 13, 15 and 17.
