The Danish state broadcaster DR has started the preparations for the 2004 seasons. As in previous years Denmark will select its Eurovision entry from within one final – nothing more…or less.
When in 2002 Denmark scored a last place, some people feared – and others again hoped… – that the Danish interest in the Eurovision would silently die away. However, this year DR has again received thousands of songs for next year's national final – already before DR published any official information.
This apparent interest, one might argue, might have made DR take after its Swedish brother SVT and introduce semifinals, but DR – traditional as traditions bid – will have one final only, informs Jan Frifelt, coordinator of events at DR.
The reason for this might be that the television audience are already saturated (and beyond…) via Pop Idol, Fame Factory and similar when it comes to televised music competitions of longer duration.
That being said, Jan Frifelt reassures that the 2004 final will not be broadcast from within a wardrobe either.“Agreed, we'll be having one show only, but in return it's going to be a massive one”.
According to esctoday.com's sources there are two potential venues for 2004; Aalborg Kongrescenter or somewhere in Århus (both cities situated in Northern Jutland). “I can confirm nothing”, says Jan Frifelt, but implies that the final may very well be held elsewhere than Copenhagen in 2004.
