Xavier Naidoo, one of Germany's most successful pop stars, is said to be thinking about taking part in the Eurovision Song Contest. He would like to “represent (Germany) in a sensible way”, as he told newspaper Mannheimer Morgen yesterday.
Joy Fleming, who represented Germany in 1975 with 'Ein Lied kann eine Brücke sein' suggested a duet between Xavier and herself and already has a fitting song on her hands. “Sooner or later, Joy and I will cross each other's path and talk about it”, Naidoo said and added that even Ralph Siegel had “adressed me indirectly” about a participation in the Eurovision Song Contest.
UPDATE: German broadcaster NDR feels happy about Naidoo's announcement. “We would welcome Xavier Naidoo's participation, for two reasons: first, German televiewers would keep their fingers crossed for him as one of the biggest German artists, more than for former, less known representatives. Second, he – who is not known very well abroad until now – would have an outstanding chance of international success and could win over the whole European public in the long run,” Dr. Jürgen Meier-Beer, head of entertainment at German broadcaster NDR told esctoday.com when we asked him about a comment.
NDR is currently working on a relaunch for the German preselection, which should help to position the national final against the new casting-shows by “demanding more professionalism” from participants. We asked Mr. Meier-Beer if he sees a connection between this relaunch and Naidoo's possible participance, which he negated, but added: “Our relaunch aims at more quality in terms of artists like Naidoo and would be crowned by his participance.”
