Estonians angry at Ruffus

Security guards for Vaiko Eplik, the vocalist and guitarist of the Estonian representor on the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) 2003 – Ruffus, have been hired to ensure his safety during a summer tour called The people's Europarty.

The security guards were hired soon after that when a gang of young people at the age of 13-16 were mocking Vaiko Eplik in front of his home, as well as threatened to hurt him physically, because of not the best position of the Estonian entry at the last ESC. Eighties coming back got the 21st place with just 14 points, which is not something Estonians are used to, since the worst place Estonia got was the one before the last in 1994, from that time the results have been much better, usually Estonia's song has been in the top 10, the past years in the top5. Vaiko Eplik said that he's a little terrified what could happen on the tour mentioned before.

The comments in the Estonian press haven't been negative about Ruffus, on the contrary, most of the comments say the song and Ruffus itself to be too good for the contest. Adding that behind Ruffus' unsuccess is probably the bad musical taste of the European audience.

There has also been a lot of fuss about the winner, Turkey. The Estonian press seems to be quite dissapointed about the winning song. For example the leading tabloid described the grand final of the ESC2003 with words 'the night when music died'. There's also quite a lot of discussion about Turkey being a part of Europe.

Overall the show was rated pretty good but still most experts think that the show from last year was better. The papers also hope that the organising of this year's contest developed good relationships between Latvia and Estonia, since a large part of the organising team was from Estonia.
