Tonight, the Swedish national final for the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest was held. Eleven acts competed and in the end, it was decided that Malena Ernman will go to Moscow with her song La voix written by Fredrik Kempe (music and lyrics) and Malena Ernman (lyrics).

Malena is Sweden's leading international operatic star, a mezzo soprano educated at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm. She has performed in musicals and operas at home and abroad, including operatic hot spots of Vienna, Berlin and Paris,and has in recent years spent much time in France. Her song is performed in French and English.

For the second year in a row, the jury and the televoters did not agree, although this time, the televoters managed to push jury favourite Måns Zelmerlöw into fourth place and managed to raise Malena Ernman from ninth to first place.

The regional juries were based in Luleå, Umeå, Sundsvall, Falun, Karlstad, Örebro, Norrköping, Göteborg, Växjö, Malmö and Stockholm.

The esctoday.com poll voters and the voters in the national final partly agreed. While the poll winners Alcazar only finished 5th, Malena Ernman finished second in the poll closely behind them.

In 2008, Sweden was represented by Charlotte Perelli with the song Hero. The song finished 12th in the second semi final but still made it to the final as a jury wildcard. Eventually, it finished 18th with 47 points. It was the first time since 1987/1988 that Sweden finished outside the top ten two years in a row following the Ark's 18th place in 2007. In 2009, Sweden will take part in the first semi final on 12th May.
