Tonight, the first Slovakian semi final for the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest was held. Nine acts presented one song each and three of them were chosen to move forward to the national final on 8th March. Two songs were chosen by televoting and a third one by the expert jury.

Originally, ten songs were supposed to be performed, but Desmod & Lucia Novákovádid not appear on stage tonight.

The runaway poll winners Desmod & Lucia Nováková(36.5%) did not perform tonight. However, Andrea Zimányiová, who finished second in the poll with 12.2% won the televote. On the other hand, the second televoting qualifiers were last in the poll with 1.4% only. VIP, who won the jury vote, had finisehd sixth in the poll with 6.8%.
Slovakia will return to the Eurovision Song Contest after eleven years. The last participation to date came in 1998, when Katarina Hasprová finished 21st with her entry Modlitba getting eight points in total and all of them from Croatia. In 2009, the country will take part in the second semi final on 14th May.
